What are sleep disorders? They are irregularities that make it hard for people to sleep soundly at night - or stay awake during the day. Millions of people have undiagnosed sleep disorders.
Common sleep complaints-
Excessive Daytime Sleepiness is a common symptom with many causes, including sleep apnea syndrome, restless leg syndrome, medications, chronic insufficient sleep and narcolepsy.
Snoring is not always just a normal annoying occurrence. If light, it may indeed be trivial. However, heavy snoring may be a symptom of a serious sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea.
Common sleep disorders-
Sleep Apnea - when a person stops and then starts breathing again many times during the night.
Narcolepsy - when a person falls asleep sudenly several times a day.
Chronic Insomnia - when a person has trouble falling asleep or staying asleep night after night.
Treatments offered -
Most sleep disorders can be effectively treated once they have been accurately diagnosed. Depending on the severity of your sleep disorder, treatment may include nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), weight loss, medication, surgery or dental appliances.
The Cheboygan Sleep Center offers free walk-in clinics every Tuesday from 1pm-6pm. If you or someone you know is having problems/concerns with their CPAP, or mask, feel free to come in and ask questions. There is no appointment necessary. You may also call the Sleep Center during this time to speak with a sleep technician, (231) 627-7327.
